Up The Garden Path - Safely

Most people don't think of the garden as a dangerous place, but Kiama Safe Communities wants people to think again.
The garden is where 25 per cent of all home injuries occur and, to combat this, the safe communities group and Kiama Community Health Service are running a Stay Safe in Your Garden Workshop on Thursday.
Kiama Safe Communities project coordinator Patricia Knight (pictured) said the workshop would address safe gardening practices including injury prevention, gardening equipment and back care.
Mrs Knight said gardening promoted good health and well-being but accidents such as tripping on tools could result in serious injuries, including hip fractures.
Guest speakers at the workshop will outline ways to create a safer garden and avoid injuries, and there will be health and safety displays.
The workshop is free, includes morning tea, and prizes will be awarded.
It will be held at Hindmarsh Park Community Hall from 10am to 12.30pm.
Those interested in attending can contact Mrs Knight on 42320557.
TIPS FOR HAPPY GARDENERS
* Paths can be slippery if covered in moss and leaves - regularly clear these away with a broom or high pressure hose.
* Repair cracks or raised concrete on paths as these can easily trip you up.
* Gravel paths and driveways can be slippery.
* If redoing paths and driveways, consider using a surface which is slip resistant and has even surfacing.
* Invest in a garden shed or an area where equipment can be stored within easy reach, to avoid tripping over tools.
* Invest in good garden lighting, especially over stairs.
* Steps can contribute to falls - ensure there is a handrail or a stair tread, mark step edges with paint and repair broken edges.
* Use step ladders with a hand rail and always have someone with you.
* Use long-handled tools to prevent excessive bending.
* Use a tool belt or an apron with a large pocket to avoid carrying tools.
* Wear comfortable shoes with even tread when gardening - don't use old shoes.
